# Baconflo.ai Chrome Webpage Reader

Baconflo.ai Chrome Webpage Reader reads webpages aloud using either private voices already on your computer or expressive OpenAI neural speech.

## Download and install

1. Download `Baconflo.ai-Chrome-Webpage-Reader-v1.4.2.zip` from the Baconflo.ai Apps page.
2. Unzip the download.
3. In desktop Chrome, open `chrome://extensions`.
4. Turn on **Developer mode**.
5. Select **Load unpacked**, then choose the unzipped `Baconflo.ai Chrome Webpage Reader v1.4.2` folder.
6. Pin **Baconflo.ai Chrome Webpage Reader** from Chrome's Extensions menu.

The extension is designed for desktop Chrome and Chromium-based browsers that support Manifest V3 unpacked extensions. Chrome does not allow extensions to read protected pages such as `chrome://` settings or the Chrome Web Store.

## Use it

- Open a normal webpage and select the Reader extension.
- Choose **Local** or **Neural**, select a voice and speed, then choose **Read page**.
- Highlight text first and choose **Read selected text** to hear only that selection.
- Use pause, resume, stop, and the passage-skip controls while listening.
- The sentence currently being spoken is highlighted in light yellow.

## Privacy and the API key

**Local mode** uses the voices available through your browser and operating system. Page text remains on the device.

**Neural mode** sends the extracted readable passage to OpenAI to create speech. It requires your own OpenAI API key and API billing. No API key is included in the download. The key is stored in the Chrome profile on your computer; anyone who controls the unlocked computer or changes the unpacked extension may be able to access it.

Generated neural audio is cached locally to avoid regenerating and rebilling repeated passages. Use **Clear audio cache** in Neural setup to remove it.

The reader excludes passwords, form controls, navigation, hidden content, scripts, and page markup from its readable-text extraction. Some highly interactive sites may expose less text than ordinary articles or training pages.

## Workplace use

Ask your employer or security team before using Neural mode with internal, confidential, customer, regulated, or proprietary information. Local mode minimizes data sharing, but your organization's browser-extension and software-installation policies still apply.

## Update or remove

To update an unpacked copy, replace the old folder with the new release, then select the reload icon for Baconflo.ai Chrome Webpage Reader at `chrome://extensions`. To uninstall it, select **Remove** on that page.

## Validation

Release 1.4.2 passed 12 automated reader checks, JavaScript syntax validation, manifest validation, archive-integrity checks, and a scan confirming that no API key is bundled.
